Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the state of performing the Breast-Self Examination (BSE) and its correlates (knowledge on BSE, health belief, and self-efficacy on BSE) in the community-dwelling middle or elderly women.
Methods: The descriptive correlational design was utilized. A total of 237 subjects was included from a district in Seoul. The structured self-administered questionnaires were used to measure the study variables. The data collected were analyzed by SPSS WIN 21.0 using ANOVA and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient.

Results: The mean age of the subjects was 58.21 (¡¾7.54) years old. 41.8% of subjects were performing the BSE. The knowledge on BSE was different according to the age, education level, the presence of spouse, and the regular performance of BSE. There were the significant differences in self-efficacy on BSE depending on the experience of breast diseases, the regular performance of clinical breast examination, and the performance of BSE. There was statistically significant relationship between health belief and self-efficacy on BSE.

Conclusion: In order to increase the percent of performing BSE, it is essential to develop the educational program on BSE and practical strategies to foster and disseminate the importance of performing BSE in the community.
